Overview
Finding a replacement throttle position sensor for an RSX Type-S or EP3 Civic Si has always been a
headache. According to ACUITY, Acura and Honda only supply the OEM sensor as part of a complete
throttle body — a list price of more than $800 — and most aftermarket options have been
low-quality copies or adapted sensors from other applications.
ACUITY designed this TPS from scratch. Rather than copy the OEM wiper-style design, it uses a modern
Hall Effect sensor inside an injection-molded nylon composite housing, and it has been tested to over
2 million cycles. The different look from the OEM part is intentional: the contactless design is
smaller, lighter, and doesn't wear the way a resistive track does.
Why Hall Effect?
Before drive-by-wire, Honda measured throttle position with wiper-style variable resistors. Those
sensors — and the many re-branded copies of them — can wear out early and give unsteady readings
from engine vibration. A contactless Hall Effect sensor is highly resistant to vibration, and the
ACUITY unit's on-board signal processor produces a smooth, consistent voltage output. ACUITY reports
the result as better tip-in response, a steadier idle, and sharper throttle response — especially on
cars running stiffer-than-stock engine mounts.
